4lb gain after a bottle of wine?

I was losing weight steadily, 1lb a week for the past 4 weeks, and then on Sunday night I drank a bottle of wine and the next morning I had put back on all 4lbs... to be expected with the wine and I thought it would drop back again but Thursday now and still 4lbs heavier than Sunday morning despite a 10 mile walk on Monday night and a 2hour gym session on Tuesday. I have my first fitting this weekend and I am so disheartened. What can I do?

Our expert says...

Hi there.

First of all do not be too disheartened. You are in a position a lot of people find themselves in ?. you have been doing the right things, steadily losing weight and then you lose control for one evening and the pounds seem to leap back on when you next get on the scales.

So, let's get this in perspective. A bottle of wine is in the region of 500-600 calories, which cannot alone account for 4lbs weight gain! No doubt, after four weeks dieting, you gave your body quite a shock. The problem with alcohol, and particularly in large quantities, is that it produces a surge in blood glucose levels, which the body responds to by releasing insulin to remove it and store it as fat. You can probably see that this sudden hit of glucose, particularly after a period of abstinence, may well have 'confused' your metabolism and your body may have hung on to these extra calories temporarily.

But there will be other factors at work here too. For example, our weight naturally fluctuates to some degree from day to day. Also, alcohol upsets the fluid levels in our bodies, which again may take a few days to settle down.

My advice is to put all this behind you, move on and be positive. You have certainly done the right thing by exercising and I'd be surprised if, by the time you read this answer, your weight hasn't returned to normal. I hope I am right and that you are smiling again for your fitting!
