Can my diet give me an upset stomach?

I have been on a diet for a week and have an upset stomach, should this be expected?

Our expert says...

No, there’s absolutely no reason to expect that counting your calories, and restricting them to a reasonable level, should cause an upset stomach. This is only likely to happen if you suddenly make dramatic changes to what you eat (perhaps by suddenly consuming much higher intakes of certain types of fibre for example).

If this is not the case I’d suggest your upset tum is probably not related to your diet at all. However, it’s always worth trying a daily probiotic drink for a while to soothe any minor gut disturbances that might be due to upsets in gut bacteria.
