Fruit and veg is making my IBS worse.

I suffer from IBS, I got on the scales this morning and I'd put a 1lb on. I know a 1lb is not a lot but it's a lot when you've stuck to it! Every time I start eating healthily my IBS flares up. If I eat more fruit and veg that kick's it off. Could that be the reason for my weight gain? Are there any other alternatives I could eat instead of fruit and veg but still have a healthy balanced diet?

Unfortunately, tummy upsets can sometimes be a problem when you change your diet. It can be as simple as your body not being used to all the fibre you suddenly start eating and this can lead to digestive problems. And this seems really unfair when you are eating healthily!

I suggest that you cut back on the fruit and veg for a few days, to allow your digestive system to recover. Once your symptoms have calmed down, you may be able to increase the quantities again, but at a slower rate. Also, make sure you drink plenty of water everyday (1 - 2 litres if possible) to keep the fibre moving through your intestines and bowel.

You could also trying juicing your fruit and veg, as this removes a lot of the fibre but leaves most of the nutrients.

Your symptoms may be linked to specific fruits and veg, so keep an eye on your food diary and perhaps make a note in the My Diary Notes section when your symptoms occur to see if you can link them to certain foods. Doing this may also help you identify any other foods that trigger your IBS as well. Common triggers for IBS are wheat, chocolate, eggs, citrus fruit, milk, food colourings and preservatives, so pay particular attention to those.

Apart from this, I also suggest that you try eating slowly, eating regularly, chewing thoroughly and trying to eat in a relaxed manner. You could also try peppermint tea, as this has been found to be particularly soothing when the gut is upset. Apart from diet, IBS often benefits from exercise and reducing stress levels.
