HRT

Hi, last year I had 3 operations - one a major one which put me straight into the menopause overnight. I went on HRT after 6 weeks and then doubled the dose. I am 45 and now 2 stone over weight. I went walking in The Lakes at the weekend and it about killed me as I am carrying so much excess weight. Before this illness I was really active and fit but had a year of doing light exercise or none at all. I don't want to yo yo diet but need some motivation to get going. Also my consultant says on average each 1 mg of HRT adds 6 lbs as I am on 2mlg that accounts for one stone but not the other which I admit might be to do with bad meal planning. Also I have been advised to cut down on wheat for a bit to see if that helps with aching joints. Life used to be so simple. Can you give me some tips and advice to get the ball rolling please.

Our expert says...

Hi, thanks for your letter. You’ve been through a tough tme, and I don’t think you should undersimate the effect, this, and the medicaton you are now on will have had  on your abilty to lose weight.

This website is the ideal one for you, as calorie couonting is the only truly scientific way of losing weight, and it also allows you the flexibility to eat as you want. Bear in mind though, as your doctor has told you, you will find it harder because of the HRT. To motivate you, why not take on some fitness challenge, such as a sponsored walk, jog or bike ride which you'll have to train for? I think increasing your fitness again seems like a great way to help you meet your weight loss targets, whilst also feeling better about yourself and your body.  As long as you are able to keep to your recommended calorie intake you will start to lose weight, though perhaps not as quickly as you might help. Stay focused and positive though, and you will get there in the end!

Also bear in mind that with the menopause now upon you, including some phytoestrogen-rich soya products in you diet might help, particularly for the future when you might start to ease off the HRT. Try soya mince, soya milk or tofu on a regular basis.

Best wishes and good luck,

Angela
