How can I boost weight loss with an underactive thyroid?

Hi,
I have an underactive thyroid and I'm finding it difficult to lose weight even though my levels are balanced. What else could I do to boost my weight loss?

Our expert says...

If you have an inactive thyroid it's a lot tougher to lose weight. The flip side to this is that once your thryoxine levels are normalised with medication, you should be able to lose weight more easily. However the reality seems to be that slimmers with a treated thyroid treated problem can still seem to find it a bit tougher to lose the pounds, perhaps because there is range of what constitutes ?normal? levels.

You could talk to your doctor about possibly adjusting your medication, or accept that you might have to manage your expectations. On the positive side, increasing your exercise levels will help (try to do some muscle building exercise as the more muscle you have the higher your metabolic rate will be).

Another option is shaving off a few extra calories if you can do it comfortably (but never go less than 1,000 calories a day). Don?t forget to include dairy products in your diet (low fat versions) as there?s evidence that the calcium in them may be able to help you shed weight. And if you are a tea drinker you might want to try swapping to green or oolong as some preliminary research seem to show these can boost metabolism a little.
