How can I exercise with my weak knees?

Hi, Both my knees are quite weak as the muscles did not grow properly. Being overweight only makes the problem worse. After half an hour of walking my knees are sore and I pay for it the next day. What kind of exercise can I do without being in pain? I can't swim and don't wish to learn. Thanks for your help!

Our expert says...

Hi,

The best exercise you can do for your knees is corrective exercise to strengthen and stabilise the knee joints and all the soft tissue, (ligaments, tendons and muscles that attach in to form the knee joint) to eradicate the problem and allow you to exercise as you want without pain and discomfort. I would recommend you see a sports therapist, corrective exercise specialist (Level 4 personal trainer) or physiotherapist so you can resolve the current susceptibility at your knees. In the meantime, non-impact exercise such as cycling on a stationary bike in a gym or outside (especially with the weather improving) could be a good option as the predictable, straight-line motion without the impact may allow your knees to function better without bringing on pain.

It is always better to deal with and resolve pain then to avoid/work around it.

Hope this helps,

Kelly
