How do I manage migraines triggered by low carb intake?

I suffer badly with migraines and one key element, which triggers my migraines, is not eating enough carbs. Therefore would you suggest eating plenty of things like pasta, potato etc which do not have a high fat content? Also, I'm trying to not eat more than 25g of fat per day until I reach my goal. Is it safe to do this? Once I reach my goal I would like to increase my calories and fat slightly.

Hi

Thanks for your query about migraine –you are right to keep up your carb intake as this is a good strategy for beating the headaches. So, good options would be whole grain bread, wholewheat pasta, brown rice and noodles. Making sure you eat regularly 3 or 4 times a day will also help a great deal, as will staying well hydrated.

As far as eating only 25g of fat a day is concerned, this is on the absolute lower limit of what is healthy and though it’s ok for a while, I suggest you do increase it as soon as you can, preferably by adding healthy fat sources such as salmon, avocado and almonds. Fat carries nutrients such as vitamins A, D and K, and also supplies the two essential fatty acids linoleic and alpha linolenic acid, which can’t be made by the body and must be supplied by the diet. These are need for functions such as growth and healthy skin and protecting against certain diseases, so you can see why some fat is important!

Over time, increasing your intake to nearer 50g a day would be desirable.

I hope this helps!
