How does an underactive thyroid affect weight loss?

Hi could you tell me what effect having an underactive thyroid gland actually has on losing weight? I was diagnosed 9 weeks ago with one thank you

Our expert says...

An underactive thyroid gland produces insufficient amounts of thyroid hormones that are needed to regulate the metabolism. As a result, there is a decrease in the body's metabolism which of course means you will find it harder to lose weight. Other symptoms include feeling the cold, depression and lethargy, constipation, dry, rough skin and poor memory. Decreased metabolism requires lifelong treatment with thyroxine tablets but finding the right dose may take a little time. However once this has been achieved you should be able to live completely normally and have no more difficult a job than the next person in losing weight! It is good you have been diagnosed, because things should only get better from here on in.
