How many calories will I lose from singing?

Hi, How many calories will I lose singing, any? There is not much movement other than standing up and sitting down, and of course holding the music. I will be doing a workshop for 4 hours and then singing in a service and practice for a couple of hours. What do you think?

Our expert says...

Hi,

As you pointed out, there isn't much movement involved whilst your singing so the amount of calories burned won't be hugely significant.  However, this doesn't mean its completely irrelevant and singing could still count towards your daily calorie expenditure.

Standing up and sitting down and standing whilst singing will require a certain amount of musculature support from large muscle groups which will increase calorie expenditure.  In addition to this, singing will require the ventilatory muscles to work harder.  I would suggest you use a figure of 164 calories burned per hour.

Hope this helps,

Kelly
