How should I exercise with osteoporosis?

Hi, My mother developed osteoporosis in her later years I was wondering if certain types of exercise can ameliorate or prevent it?

Our expert says...

Hi,

Exercise is an excellent preventative as well as a supportive tool for osteoporosis. The regular movements of the joints achieved through light exercise, help to keep joints supple and relieve pain caused through osteoporosis and increase muscle strength, coordination and balance. In addition it reduces the likelihood of falls, a risk that increases with age.

When you start with an exercise program you will need to start slowly, aiming to improve the strength and flexibility of your soft tissues (muscles) so they can optimally support your joints. Research has demonstrated how exercise promotes the building and maintaining of bone density with the specific incorporation of resistance and weight-bearing exercise, so in particular strength training with bodyweight, dumbbells or resistance machines, walking, stair climbing, hiking or running are highly recommended to help prevent osteoporosis and as a source of support for those who suffer with it.

Whatever activities you undertake just ensure that you listen to your body and do not continue exercise that causes you pain.

Hope this helps,

Kelly
