I have an underactive thyroid. Any suggestions?

I have an underactive thyroid and find losing weight really difficult even when counting the calories. Any suggestions what I should not eat?

Our expert says...

As long as you are keeping within your calorie allowance there is little extra you can do to encourage weight loss, apart from also increase the amount of exercise you do. It can take a lot of trial and error to get the right dosage of medication for your condition, so do go back to your GP if you aren't happy! You could take along a print out of your food diary to show him / her how your weight loss isn't progressing as it should.

The only other thing I?d mention is that some foods contains what is known as ?goitrogens? which can suppress thyroid function These include broccoli, cauliflower, Brussels sprouts, cabbage, mustard, kale, soya, pinenuts and peanuts. You?d need to eat these in very large quantities to cause a real problem, but it's worth bearing the list in mind.
