Whats the difference between jogging on the spot & jogging?

Hi, Can you tell me if Jogging on the spot at home burns around the same amount of Calories as jogging on the side walk? Also how fast is fast enough for it to be jogging and not just walking fast? Thanks

Our expert says...

Hi,

Jogging on the spot would equate essentially to 389 calories per hour. The physical demand on the body to jog on the spot is not as high as the demand to jog with forward propulsion so generally jogging figures would be higher then that for jogging on the spot (as propulsion upwards is required but without forwards propulsion). Jogging on the spot is, however, still an impact activity using the legs so the demand is reasonable.

The main differentiation between fast walking and jogging is that jogging at any pace involves only one foot to be in contact with the ground at any one time. Walking at any speed is still walking if at one point both feet are in some contact with the ground. For example, the international sport of ‘power walking’ involves athletes being supervised throughout and if it is seen that at any point only one foot is in contact with the ground then they are penalised for running.

Hope this helps,

Kelly
