Help with Diet Pills

Hi there, I keep looking at taking a diet pill to give me some more energy and motivation as I am lacking both at the moment. I am looking towards the T5 end of the spectrum not the Adios as I have found they do not work for me. I have recently joined the gym but I am finding it a chore instead of motivation as my weight loss is slow I am currently 10st 8lb and want to get down to at least 9 stone. What other means can I use instead of these short term solutions please? Thanks

A.

Our expert says...

Hi there,

Thanks for your email.

Diet pills are not something that we would recommend to support long term, sustainable weight loss. T5 pills are thyroid hormone based, and as such can interfere with your metabolism. Although you might see some immediate results, there is no regulation of the diet pill industry, and as such there are no long term studies looking at their effect on the body.

If you want to lose weight and keep it off, it does take a while and a lot of perseverance to get there. If you're finding the gym a chore, then it might be worthwhile having a one to one session with a gym instructor who can give you a personalised programme using the equipment you do like, or maybe be able to suggest some classes that you might enjoy.

In terms of your food intake, make sure that your calorie allowance is at the right level for you - is your activity level set at the right setting for example? Your calorie allowance could be inappropriate for your weight loss goals if your setting and personal details aren't exactly right.

There are lots of short term quick fixes out there to help with weight loss but they won't help in the long term. If you're finding it tough at the moment, then maybe it's not the best time for you to be worrying about dieting. With Christmas coming up, it can be a time with lots going on. If it's not working for you, maybe think about starting a fresh once Christmas is out of the way, or when you have a special event or night out to concentrate on. Setting realistic goals can really help when you're trying to find the motivation to stick to a weight loss plan.

I hope that this helps. If you do decide to go down the diet pills route, I would strongly suggest that you have a chat with your GP or pharmacist first to ensure that whatever you decide is suitable for you.

Best of luck

Janet
