How can I exercise given I have damage to my neck?

Hi,

I had an accident in August which damaged my neck; I have reduced mobility and a lot of pain in my back and right arm. Until this week I have been virtually immobile only able to walk for a few minutes before needing to rest. I will need an operation to deal with the injury long term but until then want to increase my exercise levels to aid my weight loss. I am a member of a gym but not really sure what I can do other than walking on the treadmill.

Hi,

I am afraid without doing a physical assessment of your alignment and complications I really cannot comment on what exercise you could/should do. I actually would not want give general advice based on assumptions either, as the potential seriousness in terms of risk of further complication or pain due to the issue relating to the neck, means general guidelines are inappropriate.

For your situation you require a corrective exercise specialist (Level 4 personal trainer) to specifically consider your muscle and skeletal alignment restrictions, the next best thing would be a physiotherapist with a reasonable awareness and experience within the exercise/fitness industry.

I can only suggest that you speak to the gym manager/general manager at your gym to see who the highest qualified trainer they have is and what they can do for you. You need guidance from a specialist and I strongly encourage you to go to the trouble of finding one! Be careful of the impact nature of the treadmill long-term (you would benefit from finding a suitable non-impact alternative to phase in with the treadmill) and do not do anything that mimics or worsens the pain you are currently experiencing!

I am sorry I cannot be more helpful, but hopefully this advice will point you in the right direction to getting the support you need.

Kelly
