Q.

Does varying daily calories (like 5:2) help weight loss?

I have read that varying the number of calories each day can jolt the system into better weight loss. e.g. Fast 2 days per week (max 500 cals on those days) and then distribute the calories onto the other days of the week. Is there any truth to this? And is it possible to specify reduced number of calories for certain days on the Nutracheck eating plan, to accommodate this?

Thanks for your question.

Intermittent fasting is something I have been asked about a few times, so I have written an article about my views. It is posted in the Nutracheck Resources section, but I have included a link to it here:

If you have a read of this, I think you will find it helpful.

There is also a Nutracheck Blog, posted only last week, that reports back on a British Nutrition Foundation conference held in London in early January which considered the evidence for popular diets. I suggest that you have a read of this too as it covers the 5:2 diet. You can find the blog under the ‘Resources’ tab, but here is a direct link to it:

To answer your question 'Can this approach be accommodated within Nutracheck?', we do have a setting that lets you fluctuate your daily calorie allowance slightly, but it won't go below 1,200 calories on any day. To try this, click on the 'Settings' link above your diary and scroll down to 'Set easier days'. You can tick days of the week that you would like more calories on and your weekly allowance is then redistributed across the week. But as I say, our minimum target is 1,200 calories / day.

I hope these articles answer your questions and explain our views.
