Q.

Feeling frustrated with my weight loss.

Hi can you please advise. I have been losing weight mostly consistently, but on studying my progress chart I realised that I have only lost 17 1/2lb in 3 months. I did expect to lose around 24lb or so. I did go on holiday for 2 weeks and didn't manage to exercise for the second week as the Scottish weather was throwing everything at us. I have stepped up my exercise since joining this site almost 100% as I was quite lazy. Could it be the fat weight versus muscle weight thing or were my original expectations too high. I have only lost 7lb in two months but two of those weeks were holiday. Please help I am feeling a bit frustrated but not unmotivated. By the way this is a brilliant site. I love it.

Our expert says...

Hi,

Thanks for writing in and also for letting us know how much you like our site.  It certainly sounds like this approach is working for you and congratulations on losing a massive 17½ lbs in 3 months!

The most important fact you have told me is that you have been losing weight consistently. This is really important and, even if the weight loss varies each week, as long as the overall trend is down you are heading the right way!  It is very common for people to lose a lot of weight at the beginning of a diet programme, which then slows down to a steadier pace. I suspect that this is what has happened to you and your holiday may have had an impact too.

As you didn’t do much exercise before joining this site, it is very likely that your exercise regime will certainly have created more muscle in your body. And you are right when you say that muscle weighs more than fat, so this too may account for some of your weight loss slowing down.

Don’t get too frustrated.  If I were you, I would focus on my positive achievements and keep going with a regime that is clearly working.  All the best and good luck!
