Our expert says...

Hi there,

Thanks for your question.

Drinking tea is absolutely fine as part of an overall balanced fluid intake - water is the best thing to drink but other fluids including tea and coffee are fine to include too. That said, tea does contain around the same amount of caffeine as coffee so it's best to limit your intake around bedtime if you find it affects your sleep patterns.

Whilst there is quite a bit of evidence to support the health benefits of Green Tea in terms of its antioxidant properties, there is limited evidence in humans to show any benefit with weight loss. Green Tea has been linked to reduced risks of conditions such as heart disease, cholesterol levels, cancers and immune conditions so there are benefits to including it as part of your diet. Some studies suggest that green tea may have an effect on metabolism, and fat burning, but these studies tend to be in animals or lab based experiments so it's difficult to say whether the same effects may be seen in humans.

As with most foods and drinks, including something like green tea, as part of a healthy balanced diet may help with weight loss, and certainly has some potential health benefits.

I hope this helps to answer your query, please don't hesitate to get back in touch if you have any further questions.

Best wishes

Janet
