Q.

Help with emotional eating please!

I have got a serious problem with binge eating. Whenever my emotions change I eat and eat and eat. If something bad happens in my day I eat as much as possible, it seems to be a comfort. This habit started whilst I was pregnant almost 2 years ago, I am not gaining weight (at the moment) but I am not loosing any either even though I am an avid runner. It is making me miserable. How can I control myself? Maybe this is not the right area to post but I really want some advice.
Thanks in advance
Louise

Hi Louise

Sometimes the strongest longings for food happen when you're at your weakest point emotionally. But you don?t need me to tell you that emotional eating - eating as a way to suppress or soothe negative emotions, such as stress, anger, anxiety, boredom, sadness and loneliness can play havoc with your waistline!

To try to regain control of your eating habits, you need to learn to recognise true hunger. If you ate just a few hours ago and don't have a rumbling stomach, you're probably not really hungry, so give the craving a few minutes to pass. Also check your triggers (you can do this using your food diary). Over time, you may see patterns emerge that reveal negative eating patterns and triggers to avoid. The other thing you can so is look elsewhere for comfort. Instead of unwrapping a choccie bar, take a walk, treat yourself to a movie, listen to music, read or call a friend. If you think that stress relating to a particular event is nudging you toward the refrigerator, try talking to someone about it to distract yourself. Plan enjoyable events for yourself. Also try not to have unhealthy foods around as you can?t eat them if they are not there! Try to eat at fairly regular times and don't skip breakfast as rollercoaster blood sugar level are the likeliest way to provoke cravings. If these suggestions don?t help enough, you could try a self-hypnosis tape to deal with weight loss / emotional eating issues (there are plenty to choose from on www.amazon.co.uk).
