Stopped losing weight!

Hi, I only started my diet last Tuesday (22nd July) with a goal of losing approximately 1 stone. I steadily lost weight until Saturday (26th July) by which time I had lost 4lbs. But then, come Sunday, my weight hadn't shifted at all then by this morning (Monday 28th July) I had put on 1.4lbs.

I don't know whether I am doing anything wrong. The only thing I can think of is that I have been struggling to actually meet the full calorie count set by this site most days and I've heard that your body can go into 'starvation mode' when there isn't enough calories coming in. Is this possible even when doing regular exercise - either being at work where I would be on my feet all day or swimming / running on my days off. I am not feeling any lack of energy, in fact I am feeling full up and satisfied.
What shocked me most however, was the lack of change in my weight between Saturday and Sunday when on Saturday I played football (as I do all Saturdays) and according to this site I burned nearly 900 calories whilst at the same time I only consumed 1103 calories (551 under my daily cal target). Can you please advise me what I am doing wrong as it appears that not only have I reached my plateau in less than a week but I've started to gain weight again with little calorie consumption and regular exercise. I have always had a poor metabolism but I just don't understand what's happening and as a result am finding it difficult to keep motivated...
Thanks Nick

Our expert says...

Hi Nick,

I'm so glad you have written in with your concerns, because it can be really helpful to get an external view when you feel that you are not getting anywhere.

I don?t mean to sound blunt, but I think you are monitoring your weight too closely and expecting too much. The body naturally fluctuates in weight from day to day, due to a number of reasons, and this is why it is not a good idea to weigh yourself daily. I really wouldn?t recommend weighing yourself more than once a week, otherwise the small changes (or lack of changes) can be very demotivating and this makes it hard to continue dieting. I think this is what you have found.

However, there are a number of positive points in your question! You lost 2 ½ lbs in less than a week and yet you are feeling full and satisfied by what you are eating. This is good and sounds like you are going to be able to stick with your diet plan fairly easily. It is possible to eat too little when trying to lose weight, but you would probably be feeling hungry.

So, I don?t think your weight loss has plateaued during the first week. I would advise you to carry on with what you are doing, which is clearly working, and try to take a more relaxed approach to weighing yourself. Hopefully, in a few weeks, you will be pleased with the results!
