Can I get rid of fat in certain parts of the body?

How to get rid of fat in certain areas of the body?

I have a skinny top half (but big boobs) so I carry all my weight on my love handles, hips, butt and thighs. I work hard in gym doing both weights and cardio and try my hardest to stick to the diet, so how on earth can I shift this yucky fat?

I am quite a muscular person, so I can understand that my thighs probably won't shrink due to muscle (although there is fat too).

Our expert says...

The only answer for fat reduction is being discplined with both nutrition and exercise equally and at the same time! If you work hard at the gym then you have an advantage over many who don't work as hard as they think or could.

Just keep variety in your workouts to make sure you are keeping a high level of calorie output due to your constantly refreshed workouts. Make sure you get a re-program every 6 weeks, because when you have done a routine for longer then 6-8weeks, your body will be so efficient at it that the calorie demand will be greatly reduced.

If you currently do cardio and weights in one workout then consider spicing it up. If, for example, you do cardiovascular exercise then weights then try alternating both components throughout your workout. The change will increase the intensity of the workout and the calories burned.

You could also try weights first, followed by cardiovacular exercise or resistance exercise circuits where you achieve the cardiovascular effect by doing different resistance exercises in a circuit with mimimum rest. As part of your gym membership you should have continuous access to their fitness professionals so get one of them to help you make some changes.

Apart from this, it is simply nutrition...eat less, move more, enjoy the process and be patient as your body starts to utilise the different fat stores around the body.

If you do have quite a lot of muscle tissue on your thighs already, then focus on longer-duration cardiovascular exercise and high reps with leg exercises like lunges and squats using your bodweight.

These small variable changes promote lean muscle tissue developement (similar to that of endurance runners for example) and is quite an effective technique for reducing muscle size due to past exercise (team sports, power training or low-rep training can all develop excellent levels of muscle strenght and tone) or genetics (people can be genetically predisposed to be able to develop better muscle strength in certain muscles than others.

Hope this helps.
