Why do we burn calories but not fat when we exercise?

Hiya, My husband keeps asking why we don't burn fat with exercise, but we burn calories?? Thanks Aebaa

Our expert says...

HI Aebaa

We do in fact burn fat when we exercise – at least when we exercise aerobically – which is any exercise that is more than a very quick burst and gets your heartbeat raised and uses oxygen. Depending on the intensity and duration of exercise we will also burn glycogen (stored carbohydrate) and protein, all of which contain calories. Any type of exercise will ultimately reduce the body’s fat stores, so do what suits you best!
